In my English 101 class, we started off the semester learning about society’s norms and what is essentially right and wrong in the world. The one norm that really stood out to me were gender norms. Gender norms separate men and women across many social and popular cultural activities, including television shows, advertisements, movies, clothes, jobs, and so on. Our society is based on rules and if you do not follow them, you are considered weird and abnormal. For example, if you are a woman, you must appear sweet, well dressed, and caring. For a man, you need to appear strong, brave, and confident. These norms are present in our every-day lives and we do not notice them since we are used to how our society is run. People in our society even try to break the gender norm, but they often fail to do so since it is so common for us to act in a manner that splits our genders. It is perceived as awkward a man to be doing an activity a woman would normally do and vice versa in our society. In one of the paper’s I wrote, the main point I made was about gender stereotypes in advertisements. The advertisement I choose was a toy ad that consisted of a young boy fiercely holding a toy gun. Words pop out and show off the gun sounds that the gun makes. The advertisement has a description of the gun itself depicting that you should buy it. Girls should not be the ones to buy this; only boys who love fighting and action. The toy gun itself symbolizes the separation of men and women.
As you can see, there is no woman in the picture. Men are seen as strong and fierce; women aren't seen the same way. Women are seen as weak, in need of protection, and objects for looking at. Another thing that is seen in this advertisement is the fact that it is from the nineteen sixties when America was at war with Vietnam. This impacted advertisements back then to reach out to young boys but not just young boys; white colored boys, that they can be a soldier as well. Although gender separation was even present in America’s past, it is much more prevalent today than ever before in our society. It is seen throughout entertainment, through social interactions, and through countless other sources. Almost every single toy that is seen nowadays is separated through gender. Even if it is the same product, society still comes up with a way to divide the line. The sources I will use in this website will also help realize how much has really changed throughout the years.
The social issue of gender runs through my three sources all differently. The sources in my paper are, How I Met Your Mother, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and a Huffington post article about clothing lines saying no to gender stereotypes. How I Met Your Mother is a television show about a man finding a lover to keep for the rest of his life. The show displays the gender norm and breaking the gender norm as well. Avengers: Age of Ultron, is a Marvel superhero movie that displays the gender norm across many different levels. The article ultimately shows the breaking of the social issue by the norm of what boys and girls can or cannot wear.
The main reason as to why I am talking about the social issue of gender is because it is a major problem than most people think. People watch movies, sports, entertainment and etc. but they don’t notice the gender stereotypes being brought into these things. A football game has all men playing the sport. The women are the cheerleaders who have to look good and dance for the crowd. Men are the ones who have the good jobs, women are the house wives. Men are strong and in control, women need protection and are helpless. All of these stereotypes all seem to connect together. Our society live is based on gender whether people notice it or not. There isn't a uniform way to make us equal if all people do is judge and decipher what our society should do.
In making this website, I made sure to have as much information as possible for the reader to understand how important the gender issue is in our society. I added various pictures to insure the understanding of the reader. There are three headers each filled with information about the source and how it relates to the social issue. The color I choose for the website for this was a neutral color as a way of saying that no gender is allowed to be on top of the other. Please feel free to scroll through the website and enjoy the great information this site has to offer!
